The first visit by a high-ranking EU official to Ukraine after Donald Trump's victory in the American presidential election took place over the weekend.
The EU's Foreign Minister Josep Borrell emphasized during his visit that Russia must be held accountable for war crimes during the invasion of Ukraine. He also repeated that Russia should be forced to pay for the damages inflicted on Ukraine.
On Sunday, Borrell visited the Chernihiv region in northern Ukraine. He stated there that a future peace must be just and sustainable.
This is a warning to those who say that "the war must end, so let's end it as soon as possible, no matter how".
Borrell also said that the approximately 300 billion dollars – 3,300 billion kronor – of Russian assets frozen by Western countries should go towards the reconstruction of Ukraine.
So far, Western countries have only agreed to provide returns from Russian frozen assets as support to Ukraine.
