It was a thrilling match when Bergström (ranked as number 51 in the world) took on European number two and world number five Bernadette Szocz in the round of 16 of the European Championship.
The Swede has not lost to the Romanian in several years, but now suffered a tough defeat with 2–4 in sets.
Criticism of the schedule
I'm most angry, actually. Ugh. I should win this match, but my body can't handle it and then it's hard to keep up for seven sets, says Bergström to SVT.
Earlier on Saturday, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals with Stina Källberg in the doubles tournament and she has also played in mixed doubles with Mattias Falck (eliminated on Thursday). The main tournament in Austrian Linz will be decided on Thursday-Sunday, but Bergström and Falck, for example, also played qualifying matches in mixed doubles on Tuesday and Wednesday.
It is what it is and you know about the schedule beforehand. Then you have to take a stand on whether you want to play everything. You want to play all classes, of course, because you want to give yourself a chance in as many classes as possible.
"Last chance"
Bergström – who played in the Olympic Games last summer – says she hasn't been able to train as she wants to over the past six months.
It's tough. With this draw, it was still my best chance of a medal in a long time and it was maybe my last chance, I don't know. We'll see, it's two years until the next (European Championship) and we'll see if I'm there then, says the Swede with tears in her eyes.
It's also over for Stina Källberg. The Swede lost the round of 16 to home player Sofia Polcanova – ranked as 14th in the world – with 0–4 in sets.
