India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party is heading for an election victory in the politically important western state of Maharashtra's election.
The voting in the two states is seen as a test of Modi's popularity. After the national election earlier this year, Modi was able to form a new government, as his alliance stood behind him. In that election, his party lost its own majority it had previously held.
According to India's Election Commission, Modi's party BJP (Bharatiya Janata) had already secured a clear majority of the 288 seats in Maharashtra, which is the country's richest state, by Saturday, before all votes had been counted. It also appears that the party will secure more seats.
The opposition Congress Party has, however, secured a majority of seats in the eastern state of Jharkhand.
