The Supreme Court in the USA allows the state of Virginia to continue a voting process that removes suspected non-citizens from the electoral roll. The process was previously stopped by a federal judge who considered it "illegal".
Republicans turned to the US Supreme Court, which in an interim decision allows Virginia to continue the process. The three liberal judges in the Supreme Court opposed the decision.
Republicans believe the effort is necessary to prevent people in the USA who do not have citizenship from voting. Democrats, on the other hand, say that Virginia's measures risk affecting people who have the right to vote.
The dispute began in August when Virginia's Republican governor Glenn Youngkin ordered election officials to be aggressive in searches for people who actually have the right to vote in the federal election on Tuesday.
