Denmark and Sweden have long been pulling in the same direction in their resistance to common EU loans. But now Denmark is changing its stance, at least if the goal is to improve EU countries' defense and competitiveness.

I cannot see how we can finance it with ordinary means. Seen with European eyes, I do not doubt that we must make all these investments, otherwise we will lose our opportunity to stay ahead or our global influence, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) in an interview with the news agency Ritzau.

Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Austria have long been called EU's "frugal four" for their striving for a restrained EU budget and critical view of EU taxes and EU loans.
