The best way forward is to "pass the torch". That's what US President Joe Biden said in his first appearance after dropping out of his re-election campaign.
The defense of democracy is more important than any title, said Biden.
The historic announcement of his withdrawal came on Sunday, in the form of a letter published on social media.
The speech to the nation, held in the Oval Office at the White House, was the president's first appearance since then.
Biden stated that, considering what he has achieved during his years in office, he has earned four more years in the White House – but he admitted at the same time that the US needs "younger voices".
There is a time and a place for long experience. There is also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, and, yes, younger voices, he said.
Will work hard
Biden added that it's time to pass the torch to the next generation, and that nothing should get in the way of saving democracy.
This includes personal ambitions.
At the same time, Biden said, he will work hard during his last time in office until the election in November. He mentioned that he will focus on stopping gun violence, working hard for peace in Gaza, and continuing to focus on a strong and united NATO.
I draw strength and find joy in working for the American people. But this sacred task of perfecting our union is not about me. It's about you. Your families. Your future. It's about "We the people", said Biden, referring to the first three words of the US Constitution.
"Needs to unite the party"
The withdrawal came after criticism from his own camp in the wake of Biden's disastrous performance in a debate against Republican Donald Trump at the end of June. Biden gave a confused and weak impression during the debate, which led heavy Democrats to urge him to drop out.
When you chose me, I chose to always be honest with you, to tell the truth, said Biden and added:
Over the past few weeks, it has become clear to me that I need to unite my party.
He emphasized several times that he believes the US's future is at stake in the upcoming election and praised his likely successor as the Democratic presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.
She is experienced, she is tough, she is capable. She has been a fantastic partner for me and leader for the American people.
