The low-conjuncture is hitting hard on new entrepreneurship. Last year, 57,400 companies were started in Sweden – the worst figure since the financial crisis in 2009.

New entrepreneurship has thus plummeted by 27 percent compared to the record year 2021, shows new statistics from the Swedish Companies Registration Office compiled by Visma Spcs.

"Four out of five jobs are created in small and medium-sized companies. Therefore, it is very serious that new entrepreneurship is at its lowest since the financial crisis in 2009. Now the government needs to show that it means business with building a richer and safer Sweden by giving small businesses the right conditions to grow and hire", says Boo Gunnarson, business expert at Visma Spcs, in a press release.

It is now the third year in a row that new entrepreneurship is declining, last year it also occurred in all 21 counties. The largest decline is seen in Uppsala and Västernorrland counties with declines of 18 and 17 percent, respectively.
