Extensive technical problems for the German federal police mean major problems at the country's airports. The computer system is crucial for passenger checks and security screening of travelers.

A spokesperson for the federal police tells the newspaper that police at border controls "must perform (the screening) manually".

From Düsseldorf's international airport, reports are coming in of hour-long queues. The computer failure primarily affects travelers from countries that are not part of the Schengen area.

The cause of the malfunction is unknown.
