An independent review committee is demanding a comprehensive reorganization of the American security service Secret Service after its "historic" failure to prevent the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July, according to a report.
"Secret Service as an authority requires a fundamental reform to fulfill its mission", write the four members of the committee in a letter to Alejandro Mayorkas, Minister for Homeland Security.
A large part of the report is devoted to identifying the specific security breaches that enabled the assassination attempt in Butler, many of which have already been acknowledged by Secret Service.
The committee writes that a new leadership group with significant experience outside Secret Service is needed in the wake of the assassination attempt, and recommends that the security service should stop investigating economic crime and refocus on its core mission of protecting high-profile individuals.
