The Parliament had gathered on Tuesday in Belgrad to vote on larger budget frames for higher education. But the opposition claimed that the session was illegal and that they should instead deal with the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic's government.
Gas projectiles thrown injured several members. One is described as seriously injured, according to reports after having had some kind of heart attack during the tumult.
The event illustrates deep divisions in Serbia. Vucevic announced his resignation in January, after several months of demonstrations against abuse of power. The focus of the protests was the tragedy in Novi Sad last autumn, when 15 people died when the roof of a railway station collapsed.
Vucevic is still sitting, since his resignation has not yet been taken up in Parliament.
