The announcement that Trump had signed the controversial tariff decision came from the White House late on Saturday evening, Swedish time. For Canada, the tariffs will be 25 percent, but according to the White House, the tariffs on energy products will be reduced to 10 percent.
The tariffs will remain in place until the American government believes that Canada is doing enough to stop the influx of the drug fentanyl into the USA, according to sources cited by, among others, Canada's public service broadcaster CBC.
Mexico is also being hit with trade tariffs of 25 percent for goods exported to the USA. Goods from China will be subject to a tariff of 10 percent, according to the White House.
The decision also includes clauses stating that the tariffs will increase if the three countries respond with countermeasures in different ways, the White House announced according to the news agency AP.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will hold a press conference about the tariffs later on Saturday, local time.
