The seven-year-old wandered into Matusadona National Park in northern Zimbabwe at the end of December. When he was finally found, he had walked a distance of around five miles, according to the authorities.
The park is home to large populations of elephants and African buffaloes, but also rhinoceroses, lions, leopards, antelopes, and zebras.
The boy is said to have survived on fruit and water that he found by digging through a riverbank. He is reported to have slept on elevated rocks to avoid being eaten by lions.
"Remarkably, he is estimated to have walked 49 kilometers through difficult terrain in the lion area of Matusadona National Park, from his village to the place where he was found," says Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for Zimbabwe's national parks, in a statement.
