Elon Musk – the world's richest man and the founder of Tesla and Space X – has backed Donald Trump in this year's election campaign. Musk, who also owns X (formerly Twitter), is campaigning for the Republican and is discussing a potential cabinet position.
However, the Democrats' Kamala Harris has also received support from a well-known billionaire, reports The New York Times. Microsoft founder Bill Gates has privately donated approximately SEK 500 million to an organization supporting Harris' campaign, according to three sources for The New York Times.
Gates, who is accustomed to not making party-political statements, does not want to comment on the reports but says in a statement to the newspaper that "this election is different" and that he "supports candidates who show strong commitment to strengthening healthcare, reducing poverty, and fighting climate change".
Gates is currently 13th on Forbes magazine's list of the world's richest people. Musk holds the top spot.
