In a statement on the White House website, the sitting president praises Harris.

"What America saw today was the Kamala Harris I know and deeply admire. She has been a fantastic partner and official full of integrity, courage, and character," says Biden.

Selecting Harris as vice presidential candidate was the first decision Joe Biden made when it became clear that he was the Democratic presidential candidate for the 2020 election. It was the best thing he did, notes the president.

"Her journey represents the best of America. And as she made clear today, I have no doubt that she will continue that journey," he says.

Biden also states that Harris was forced to step forward under "extraordinary circumstances" – and that she did so with bravado. Harris took over as the Democratic presidential candidate after Biden dropped out in July, following a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.

Harris will now continue the fight with determination and purpose, according to Biden.

"She will continue to be a champion for all Americans. Above all, she will continue to be a leader whom our children will look up to for generations to come as she puts her mark on America's future," he says in the statement.
