At the Democrats' party convention in Chicago, people are demonstrating against the American government's handling of the war in Gaza and for a ceasefire. USA's President Joe Biden is meeting them halfway.

Those demonstrators out on the street, they have a point. Many innocent people are being killed, on both sides, says Biden in a long speech to his party colleagues.

It's time to put an end to the war, he emphasizes.

USA's Foreign Minister Antony Blinken is in Israel and has announced after a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel accepts an American proposal for a path to a ceasefire. It is not clear what the proposal entails in the many disputed detail issues, or how the counterpart Hamas and the other mediators stand on it.

The talks about a ceasefire are expected to continue in Egypt on Tuesday, where Blinken also plans to go.

Dozens of people have been arrested by police outside the building in Chicago where the Democrats are holding their convention.
