The Swedish Social Insurance Agency and the Swedish Pensions Agency discover a large number of incorrect payments annually. However, long processing times make it difficult to reclaim the money, according to a report from the Swedish Social Insurance Inspectorate (ISF).
"If the work on identifying incorrect payments is intensified, the work on reclaiming the money must also be given the same priority", says Geoffrey Bogaert, project leader for the report, in a press release.
The report highlights that the authorities face significant challenges in investigating the cases.
Every year, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency has around 40,000 repayment cases that are not completed before the end of the year. Last year, the corresponding figure for the Swedish Pensions Agency was over 51,000 cases.
"Long processing times can also complicate the investigations and lead to the authorities not having the opportunity to reclaim the incorrect payments", says Bogaert.
