The incident at a sports arena occurred late on Monday evening. The driver has been arrested. No motive has yet been made public.

According to an eyewitness, groups of people had gathered to train at the facility when a car suddenly drove into them at high speed, writes BBC.

It drove around and around and people were injured all over the track – east, south, west, and north, says another witness to the Chinese news magazine Caixin.

On Tuesday, searches for the incident on social media have been heavily censored and Chinese media articles about the incident published on Monday evening have been removed.

Hundreds of residents regularly gather at the sports arena in Zhuhai to engage in athletics, play football, and socialize. The arena has announced that it will remain closed until further notice.
