Argentina is withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO), announces a spokesperson for President Javier Milei.

The announcement comes after the President of the USA, Donald Trump, announced in connection with the inauguration in January that the USA is initiating the process of leaving WHO. According to Trump, the USA pays too much compared to China. He made a similar decision during his previous term, but Joe Biden withdrew it.

Argentina bases its decision on "deep disagreements regarding health care issues, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic".

Furthermore, spokesperson Manuel Adorni says that Argentina will not "allow an international organization to interfere with our sovereignty".

WHO is the UN's agency for health issues and is the only organization with a mandate to coordinate global efforts during acute health crises, particularly outbreaks of new diseases and persistent threats such as covid-19, ebola, and mpox.
