When the TV channel CBS asks Americans about conversation topics during the family holiday, 71 percent respond that they want to avoid politics. The proportion is slightly higher among Democrats who voted for Kamala Harris, who lost the presidential election earlier in November, than among supporters of the Republican Donald Trump, who is preparing to move into the White House.

The Thanksgiving weekend is believed to have originated from the harvest festival that English colonizers and the indigenous people Wampanoag jointly celebrated in Massachusetts in 1621.

Roughly 400 years later, Americans say they are most grateful for family and friends (79 percent), followed by health (71 percent) and freedom (58 percent).
