After the Medal Drought – Started the European Championship with Wins

The Swedish women's curling team led by Anna Hasselborg has taken nine medals at the Olympic Games, World Championship, and European Championship, but has missed a medal in five of the last seven championships. The hunt for a new European Championship medal began, however, in the best possible way when the championship got underway in Lohja, Finland.

Sweden beat Scotland 8–5 in the premiere after the Scots gave up the match in the ninth round. Scotland had the advantage of having the last stone, but the Swedish women stole a point.

It was a Swedish victory also in the evening match against Hungary. But it was not an easy journey. The Hungarians led 6–1 after three rounds and 8–4 after six. Then Anna Hasselborg's team took points in the remaining rounds while Hungary was left without. The victory was written to 10–8.

At the European Championship, Team Hasselborg has taken two golds and three silvers, but last year it was Team Isabella Wranå that got to represent Sweden after winning the Swedish qualifying tournament.

Team Hasselborg missed a European Championship medal in 2022, but took Olympic bronze in Beijing the same year. Four years earlier, it was Olympic gold in Pyeongchang. At the World Championship, it has been two silvers, but four consecutive championships without a medal.

The team also consists of Sara McManus, Agnes Knochenhauer, Sofia Marbergs, and reserve Johanna Heldin.

Team Niklas Edin has an Olympic gold, seven World Championship golds, and seven European Championship golds on their merit list, but the team had to settle for a European Championship silver last year.

In this year's European Championship premiere against the Czech Republic, it was a victory with 9–6. The deciding factor came in the ninth round where Sweden took a three-pointer.

Team Edin – which also consists of Oskar Eriksson, Rasmus Wranå, Christoffer Sundgren, and reserve Daniel Magnusson – will meet Switzerland and Italy on Sunday.
