Initially, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz wanted a new election at the end of March, but the opposition pushed for a faster vote to be able to hold the election earlier. The new election is now planned for February 23.
The Federal Chancellor says he is "very glad" that the parties have been able to agree on a date, reports Tagesschau.
The deadline is at the end of February and I am very grateful for that, says Scholz.
His speech in parliament is held a week after his coalition government collapsed.
Scholz has led a minority government since 2021 after the recent German government crisis. The three coalition parties (Scholz's Social Democratic SPD, the Greens, and the liberal FDP) have been arguing internally for a long time and have had headwinds in public opinion.
Scholz himself has had historically low confidence ratings.
