The Palestinians' leader Mahmud Abbas has congratulated the USA's president-elect Donald Trump on his election victory. In the phone call, Abbas said that he is ready to participate in efforts to achieve a "just and comprehensive peace", according to Abbas' presidential office.
According to the Palestinian president's office, Trump "emphasized that he wants to work to stop the war, that he is willing to work with President Abbas and the parties involved in the region and in the world to achieve peace in the region".
Trump's staff has not commented on the phone call. During the election campaign, Trump hinted that he wants to see peace in the Middle East, but he simultaneously emphasized the USA's full support for Israel. He also expressed understanding for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's desire to "finish the job" of stopping Hamas in Gaza.
