43 monkeys have escaped from a research center near the town of Yemassee in the American state of South Carolina.

The police are now urging residents to keep doors and windows closed to prevent these animals from entering their homes.

However, there is no danger to the general public.

They are not infected with any disease whatsoever. They are harmless and a bit shy, says local police officer Gregory Alexander to AP.

Heat lamps and traps have been set up around the area to catch the escaped monkeys.

Their caretakers know them very well and can usually lure them back with fruit or a small treat, says Gregory Alexander.

It is not the first time that monkeys have escaped from the center, similar incidents occurred in both 2018 and 2016.

The species of monkeys that escaped has not been specified yet, but the center is said to have macaques and capuchin monkeys, according to its website, writes Sky News.
