Karoline Leavitt has held the corresponding position for Trump during the election campaign and now holds it during the preparations for the entry into the White House.

"Karoline is smart, tough, and has shown that she is a very effective communicator," Trump comments on the appointment.

He says he is convinced that Leavitt will excel at the podium in the White House press room. The job typically includes holding daily press briefings.

Leavitt becomes the youngest person to hold the position so far, two years younger than Richard Nixon's press secretary Ronald Ziegler in 1969. She is not unfamiliar with the White House interior, having worked in the press staff during Trump's first term.

During his first four years as president, Trump went through four press secretaries but often acted as his own spokesperson, not least through countless social media posts.
