The Monnaie de Paris, the state-owned institution that produces France's coins and medals for the Paris Olympic Games, has received 220 requests from athletes.
This corresponds to four percent of all medals awarded during the Games.
"The Monnaie de Paris has replaced some of the medals and will continue to do so, due to demand from the athletes," they write in a statement.
Earlier, there have been reports of problems with the medals.
Swedish sailor Anton Dahlberg, who won an Olympic bronze medal last summer, told in January about a medal that had started to flake.
It's a bit disappointing that the medal doesn't hold the quality promised, he said.
It started surprisingly fast. After two weeks, I'd say. We had a little medal celebration here and there, and it no longer shone with French cultural pride.
