In the beginning of March, the news came that Tobias Bergman is leaving as the national team captain for the men's and women's national teams in table tennis due to personal problems.
A few days later, three of Sweden's four top players – Anton Källberg, Kristian Karlsson and Mattias Falck – went out on social media with a supportive message to Bergman.
The absence of Truls Möregårdh's name made it talked about a crack in the national team.
”Strange and stupid”
The reason why I was not included in that post was that I did not get asked to be included by the others in the national team. I cannot answer why they did not ask me, says last year's Jerring prize winner and continues:
It became very strange and stupid of them in the end, which they have apologized for to me. It feels better now. It was definitely a strange time.
He tells that he contacted Bergman privately instead.
I have shown my support to Tobias as a person since I had him before as a coach.
During this period, Möregårdh and the association were in a conflict about the star's coaching solution. In the end, the older brother Malte Möregårdh got to go as a private coach to the World Championship in Doha this spring, which ended with a bronze.
It feels great. With the results we have shown since Malte started coaching me on the tour, it feels like it was pretty obvious that it was a good choice by the association to listen to what I need in the end.
Now the big competition Europe Smash is waiting at home in Malmö.
It feels super strange that it is here in one's hometown. It's fun to get to show my friends on the world tour what it looks like for me at home. And to get to play in front of the Swedish people, who finally get to see some world table tennis.
Is injury-free
Möregårdh comes to the home competition in great form. In the latest Smash competition in Las Vegas in July, he had continued injury problems, but recently in Yokohama, Japan, the Swedish world seventh reached the semifinal on the world tour.
It felt like it was one of the first competitions in several months where I was actually not injured. It was just to gas and there were no excuses.
After the World Championship bronze and Champions League gold with the German club Saarbrücken, Möregårdh hopes to go far in the home tournament.
It's actually my three biggest goals this year. It has gone well with the two other goals – so hopefully I can fix a hat-trick now, says Truls Möregårdh.
