16 soldiers have been killed and several have received life-threatening injuries in an attack on a military outpost in the Makeen area of Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan, according to a source with insight.
The siege lasted for approximately two hours and the attackers attacked the outpost from three directions, according to a high-ranking source within the intelligence service for AFP.
The Taliban in Pakistan have taken responsibility for the attack, which the group claims is revenge for the "martyrdom of high-ranking commanders". The Taliban claims to have seized a large quantity of military equipment, including machine guns.
