The regions of Blekinge, Värmland, and Uppsala have decided to offer the test, which can detect cervical cancer at an early stage. The women who have not been tested are found in all regions and were born between 1947 and 1952.
The HPV test was introduced in 2015 for all women up to 70 years old, but it took the regions almost six years to get started with the tests. During this time, the affected women turned 70 and left the national screening program for cervical cancer. The women are now overrepresented among severe cancer cases, according to DN's investigation.
HPV is an abbreviation of human papillomavirus. Some types of HPV can cause cell changes that can develop into cancer, for example, in the cervix.
