All parties in the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament) support a proposal to introduce a law to stop the so-called teenage deportations. But passing such a law could take time, and how it will be designed remains unclear.
Swedish politicsThe red-green parties will summon Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M) and the Swedish Migration Agency to the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament) to ask questions about the deportation of teenagers.
Swedish politicsThe red-green parties strongly criticize the government's late announcement on quota refugees, which means that 350 people will receive protection this year. At the same time, the parties disagree among themselves about how many refugees Sweden should accept.
Swedish politicsThe red-green parties Social Democrats (S), Left Party (V), Centre Party (C) and Green Party (MP) have agreed on a law to stop the deportation of teenagers. It is their first substantive political agreement since the election.
Swedish politicsThe Social Democrats do not look likely to get a ban on profiteering in schools through if they are to cooperate with the Christian Democrats and the Center Party after the election. But a change in school funding that affects independent schools may be easier to agree on.
Swedish politics"The Center Party wants to remove the wage floor for labor immigration to Sweden. I promise that it will be one of the first decisions we make in a center-right government," party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist says at a press conference.
Swedish politicsMP, V and C want to accept more quota refugees, and the entire opposition, including S, wants to relax the rules for family immigration. The Tidö parties warn of a return to a more generous refugee policy if the red-greens win the election.
Swedish politicsThe parliamentary debate on the government's stricter requirements for family immigration was heated from the start. People will end up in abortion or deportation, said MP Tony Haddou (V).
Swedish politicsMP and C want to stop the government's proposal for stricter rules governing the detention of children who do not have the right to reside in Sweden. To do so, they are invoking an unusual rule. Putting children in detention deprives them of their liberty and is not a reasonable arrangement, says Niels Paarup-Petersen (C).
Swedish politicsEven though the Tidö parties are now introducing a "valve" for the so-called teenage expulsions, the opposition fears that there will be loopholes in the new law. It is their way of improving their standing in opinion polls, not addressing the real problems, says Niels Paarup-Petersen (C).
SwedenThe government's list of exemptions from the stricter requirements for labor immigration is significantly shorter than the Migration Board's more generous proposal. 27 professions are exempt from the wage floor of SEK 33,390, compared with the Migration Board's 81.
BusinessA measure to address the so-called teenage deportations will be presented shortly. But young people who have already been forced to leave Sweden appear to be excluded.
SwedenThe Tidö parties say no to a proposal to retake the vote that triggered the balance-of-power chaos in the Riksdag. The Riksdag majority was cheated out of that vote by the Sweden Democrats (SD). "It's so anti-democratic," says the Center Party's Niels Paarup-Petersen.
Swedish politicsThe government is moving forward with a ban on profit distribution for the first five years for newly established independent schools. Profit distribution will also be limited in the event of a change of ownership or if the school has quality deficiencies.
Swedish politicsSweden, together with the European Commission, will hold talks with the Taliban. The goal is to enable deportations to Afghanistan - but the announcement is being criticized. "A deal with extremists," says Annika Hirvonen (MP).
SwedenThe Center Party proposes a fast track to Swedish citizenship.
SwedenThe human rights organization Civil Rights Defenders views the Tidö parties' proposed changes with concern, especially regarding how people are allowed to express themselves. "It creates different levels of freedom of expression," says Chief Legal Officer John Stauffer.
SwedenThe opposition welcomes the Tidö parties' decision to pause teenage expulsions. But the Centre Party, among others, believes they should do more.
SwedenS and L chose not to support V's and MP's proposal in the social insurance committee on teenage deportations. "S and L have lied to the Swedish people straight to their faces and said they want to stop the deportations," says V's migration policy spokesperson Tony Haddou.
Swedish politicsThe Center Party wants answers from the Swedish Migration Agency about what the agency needs to be able to stop the deportations of teenagers. The director-general will now answer questions before the Social Insurance Committee.
SwedenMinister of Education Simona Mohamsson (L) invites all parliamentary parties to a discussion about screen time and age limits for social media. S, V and C accept, but say they have difficulty taking the invitation seriously.
Swedish politicsAnna-Karin Hatt's resignation after just six months as party leader came as a bombshell. Now there is a rush to find a new party leader. The question is whether the party will return to the names that were relevant in the latest party leader elections, or if new names emerge.
Swedish politicsThe Centre Party and the Green Party want the government to appoint a parliamentary committee to achieve broad support for how Sweden's grading system should be reformed.
