The Green Party presented an initiative in the Social Insurance Committee to re-vote on transitional rules for stricter citizenship rules.

All opposition parties voted yes, but the Tidö parties said no.

"There is no majority in the committee on the substantive issue," says committee chairman Viktor Wärnick (M).

M: Not constructive

In parallel, talks are underway between the parties' group leaders about the set-off agreement.

"Now we have had this lying on the committee's table while the group leaders have been discussing the set-off system, but from what I understand the opposition is not having particularly constructive discussions, and then there is no reason to wait it out, so we have decided the matter today," says Wärnick.

The Green Party believes that the new law would never have passed if the Sweden Democrats had not violated the set-off agreement between the parties, and therefore the vote should be re-run.

The party wants to see a new agreement where it is agreed that the vote that "went wrong", not only the one on transitional rules but also going forward, should be retaken. Such a principle would minimize the incentives for a party to do what SD did, according to the Green Party.

“Not up to the task”

The Center's migration and integration policy spokesperson, Niels Paarup-Petersen, reacts strongly to today's announcement in the committee.

"It is as anti-democratic as anything can get, and if the Moderates cannot realize that, then they are not up to the task of being the leader of the government."

"This is the absolute highest level of decision-making in this country, and the SD cheated to ensure that the parliamentary majority did not pass."

The opposition thinks that the Moderates should be able to admit that what the SD did was wrong.

"It is an issue that I understand is being discussed at group leader level in connection with the set-off system; it is not something that the committee handles," says Viktor Wärnick.
