At Tuesday’s meeting of the Social Insurance Committee, the red-green parties - the Social Democrats (S), Left Party (V), Centre Party (C) and Green Party (MP) - will ask Forssell and the Swedish Migration Agency what is needed to quickly introduce a stopgap law.
The best thing would be for the government to listen to the committee majority and begin drafting legislation, says Niels Paarup-Petersen, the Centre Party’s migration policy spokesperson.
The parties also want to know what it would take for the Swedish Migration Agency to pause deportations now, pending new legislation.
Since the agency was able to pause deportations because of imprecise legislation from the government, as it said at a press conference, the question is what it would take for it to do so when there is a majority in the committee, says Paarup-Petersen.
Last week, the red-green parties agreed on a stopgap law to prevent the deportation of teenagers.
But it could take several months to put the law in place.
The proposal also did not specify which group it would cover. Migration Minister Johan Forssell (Moderate Party), who is part of a caretaker government, has said the government can take a constructive part in drafting the temporary law, but has several questions about how it should be designed.
