Swedish Social Insurance Agency

Pays parental benefit, VAB, child allowance, sickness benefit and other social insurance.

Försäkringskassan

What it handles: parental benefit and the ten days at birth, care of a sick child (VAB), child allowance, sickness benefit after the employer's sick pay, housing allowance for families and the dental care subsidy.

How to reach it: apply and report on My Pages (Mina sidor) with e-identification, call the customer centre, or visit a service centre.

Where people get stuck: most benefits require that you are insured in Sweden, which usually follows from living or working here. Newly arrived residents often wait until Försäkringskassan has assessed that, so apply early.
