A wolf was shot during an attack in a sheep enclosure north of Karlsborg in Västra Götaland on Friday.
21 sheep are dead after the attack, which was the second in a few days in the county.
The wolf attack near Undenäs in Karlsborg municipality was discovered early in the morning. The attack was ongoing when a person who was tending to the animals arrived.
A wolf was shot on the spot, says Anita Bergstedt, wildlife coordinator at the county administrative board.
About 15 sheep were killed by the wolf. Some others were so severely injured that they had to be put down, according to Bergstedt.
The wolf that was shot was a young female.
If a wolf attacks domestic animals and cannot be scared away, one can shoot it in a protective hunt on one's own initiative – as a last resort.
Then one must notify the county administrative board immediately, and that was done in this case, says Anita Bergstedt.
On Thursday, it was discovered that two sheep had been killed by a wolf in Alboga, near Herrljunga.
The county administrative board's investigation in Alboga shows that the wolf had crossed or jumped over a good wolf fence. However, it is not currently relevant to conduct a protective hunt after the attack.
It's difficult to know where to look for this particular wolf. We need a bit more evidence. Otherwise, you don't solve the problem, says Anita Bergstedt.
