A vehicle inspector in Växjö has admitted during questioning that he, in exchange for payment, allowed 40 to 50 cars with defects to pass inspection, reports Smålandsposten.
He claims to have earned approximately 70,000 kronor from this, according to Samir Cheic, head of the police's crime unit, in an interview with the newspaper. However, the police suspect that the scope was larger and the man is suspected of gross bribery, gross dereliction of duty, and gross false certification.
The police believe that car dealers have defrauded customers by buying cars with defects and then selling them at a higher price with the help of false inspection certificates.
A car mechanic in Växjö is suspected of bribing the vehicle inspector to incorrectly approve ten cars.
