The USA wants to strengthen NATO's military capacity in Europe, and therefore plans to place Tomahawk-type cruise missiles in Germany.
The two countries announced this in a joint statement, according to several German media outlets. The direct reason is the war in Ukraine, and the weapons are being placed as a deterrent, according to the statement.
In addition to the cruise missiles, SM-6 air defense missiles and still undeveloped supersonic weapons will be placed in Germany. The weapons are said to have "significantly greater range than the current land-based systems in Europe".
The deployment, which will take place in 2026, was initially planned to be temporary, but will now be permanent. According to the US President Joe Biden, the deployment is also part of the USA's long-term commitments to NATO.
