The White House announced on Tuesday and said that Cuba, in return, releases over 500 imprisoned regime critics.
"An evaluation has been completed, and we do not have information that implies that Cuba should be marked as a country that supports terrorism", said an unnamed official at the White House.
Cuba welcomes the news and as a thank you, releases 553 prisoners convicted of "various" crimes, according to the country's Foreign Ministry.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez says in a statement that "the USA takes a step in the right direction, but the blockade remains", the latter referring to the total economic blockade against Cuba that the USA introduced in February 1962.
But the USA's future president Donald Trump is expected to reintroduce the terrorist classification. Trump labeled Cuba with a terrorist stamp during his last days as president in 2021 during his first presidential term.
