The USA is imposing new sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine. The new sanctions are targeting dozens of Russian banks – including the largest remaining bank, Gazprombank, which has not yet been punished with sanctions.
The measure targeting financial institutions and officials "will further reduce and impair Russia's war machine", says Finance Minister Janet Yellen in a statement.
"This comprehensive measure will make it harder for the Kremlin to circumvent the USA's sanctions and finance and equip its military", she added.
The US Finance Department called Gazprombank, which is the financial branch of the Russian energy giant Gazprom, "a channel for Russia to purchase military equipment for its war effort against Ukraine".
Gazprombank has previously been sanctioned by, among others, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
