The United Kingdom will ban the opening of new coal mines, according to the country's Energy Minister Michael Shanks.
"By consigning coal power to history, we can pave the way for a clean, secure energy system", writes Shanks in a statement, where he also promises that the plans will have positive effects for electricity consumers.
Earlier this autumn, the United Kingdom's last coal-fired power plant in Nottingham was shut down, a decision that put an end to the energy source's over 140-year history in the country that was the cradle of the industrial revolution.
The Labour government claims to have the ambition that the United Kingdom will take on a leading role in the green energy transition.
