Consumer confidence in Germany unexpectedly fell in June after four months of consecutive increases. Analysts had on average expected a continued slight improvement in household sentiment in Europe's largest economy.

The German research institute GFK's monthly index for consumer confidence fell to minus 21.8. This can be compared to minus 21.0 the previous month.

The average forecast among analysts was an increase to minus 19.5.

Behind the decline lay unexpectedly high German inflation and dampened expectations regarding income and future economic development.
