Only every seventh household in Sudan's urban areas, where most of the fighting takes place, has access to healthcare. In over 60 percent of the homes, the children no longer attend school. Unemployment is skyrocketing.
The UN Development Programme UNDP is now demanding large and long-term efforts in a new report.
Support for Survival
"Short-term humanitarian support needs to be strengthened to ensure people's survival, but to address both the acute economic needs and the long-term development challenges, efforts are also required to build resilience and create conditions for recovery for Sudan's population," says Luca Renda, UNDP's country director in Sudan, in a press release.
More urban agricultural land, better access to healthcare, reintroduced distance learning, and rebuilding of critical infrastructure are some of the points that, according to the report, are needed.
The war in Sudan between the country's army and the paramilitary RSF broke out in April last year and has led to the world's largest refugee crisis. Millions of people have fled their homes since the fighting began, most of them within the country.
Sexual Violence in Darfur
The US Department of the Treasury announced on Tuesday that sanctions are being imposed on one of RSF's commanders, named Abdel Rahman Joma'a Barakallah.
The US says that the paramilitary's offensive in the Sudanese province of West Darfur "is marked by credible reports of serious human rights violations, where civilians are exposed – and that sexual violence is being used in the conflict".
The US also notes that violence is occurring against ethnic groups in Darfur.
