Tusk to EU: Chin up!

Head up and stand tall, is the call when Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk tries to get the EU to think positively about the future. But he also demands more investments in defense.

After all the concern about the consequences of Donald Trump's return as president in the USA, Tusk is instead trying to instill courage in Europe and his colleagues.

Europe was, is and will always be fantastic. What is happening now is not a threat – it's a challenge, says Tusk when he speaks in the EU Parliament about Poland's half-year as chair of the EU Council of Ministers.

The EU was created to handle this type of challenge. We are as strong as the strongest in the world. We just have to believe in it, says the Prime Minister.

But he is also clear about the need for changes and tough decisions – not least when it comes to increasing their own defense spending.

Don't ask what America can do for our security. Ask yourselves what we can do. This is not a situation where we can afford to save on security, urges Tusk.

Even the EU's Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas is on the same page.

The EU's message to the USA is clear: we must do more for our own security and take a fair share of the responsibility, she says in a speech in Brussels on Wednesday according to the news agency AFP.
