It was a noticeably tired Trump who spoke slowly with a hoarse voice at a voter meeting in Pennsylvania on Sunday, local time.
I would never have left, I mean, honestly. We were so good, we had such a fantastic... said Trump and then broke off.
The comment comes just barely 48 hours before Americans go to the polls on Tuesday. In Pennsylvania, Trump claimed that he could only lose to the Democrats' Kamala Harris if she cheated – despite opinion polls indicating that it will be a very even election.
At one point during his speech, Donald Trump also discussed the bulletproof glass that now always surrounds him at outdoor voter meetings, which was introduced after he survived an assassination attempt in July.
I have the glass here, said Trump and pointed to a gap in the bulletproof glass.
But all we have here is "fake news", he said then and referred to the gathered press corps on site.
To reach me, someone would have to shoot through "fake news". And I don't have much against that.
After critics claimed that Trump hinted that violence should be directed against journalists, his campaign staff tried to downplay the statement.
"The statement about the placement of bulletproof glass has nothing to do with journalists being harmed", said Steven Cheung, spokesperson for the Trump campaign, in a comment.
Rather, he meant that Trump hinted that the reporters themselves were in great danger and that they too should be protected behind glass.
"No other interpretation can be made of what was said. He was actually worried about their safety, much more than his own!", said Cheung.
