IVF treatments are very expensive in the USA and can cost tens of thousands of dollars – equivalent to hundreds of thousands of kronor – for a single round. Many also need multiple attempts to succeed in getting pregnant, and there is no guarantee of success.
Despite this, Donald Trump promises, during a campaign meeting in Michigan, that the state will cover the entire cost.
Under the Trump administration, your government will pay – or your insurance company will be forced to pay – for all costs associated with IVF treatment, says Trump, adding:
Because we want more babies, to put it nicely.
He did not elaborate on how this would be implemented in practice.
The abortion issue has become one of the most important in the US election campaign. Democrats and their presidential candidate Kamala Harris have made it a key issue – and Donald Trump has been heavily criticized by Democrats for his role in appointing the Supreme Court judges who overturned the Roe vs Wade decision, which guaranteed the right to abortion.
Trump has had several contradictory positions on women's reproductive rights over the years. He has repeatedly taken credit for his role in overturning Roe vs Wade and called it "a beautiful thing", but he has also advocated for the right to IVF, including when the state of Alabama ruled that frozen embryos should be considered children under state law.
