Donald Trump is back on the campaign trail.
During yesterday evening's gathering in Florida, he launched an attack on Joe Biden's vice president, Kamala Harris, a favorite tip to take over the Democratic presidential nomination if Biden steps aside.
Donald Trump has been lying low during the recent weeks' age-related turmoil surrounding Biden. When the former president resumed his campaigning in Miami on Tuesday evening, it was with his usual attacks on his presumed competitor in the November presidential election.
Our victory was so great that Joe's own party now wants him to throw in the towel and give up the presidency after just one 90-minute effort, said Trump, referring to the CNN debate between Trump and Biden on June 28.
Hints at Rubio
81-year-old Biden – whose performance in the debate was generally considered catastrophic – has repeatedly insisted that he will not withdraw, despite Democrats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate urging him to step aside. In speculations about a potential successor, Vice President Kamala Harris is the most touted name.
From the stage in Miami, 78-year-old Trump launched a hard attack on Harris, among other things, blaming her for the White House's immigration policy.
Trump also took the opportunity to fuel speculation about his own vice presidential candidate. Next week, the Republican candidate for vice president will speak to party colleagues at the convention in Milwaukee, where Trump will be formally crowned the party's presidential candidate. An announcement about the vice candidate is therefore expected to come at any time.
I think they probably think I'm going to announce that Marco (Rubio) will be vice president, said Trump with a wink to the large press corps present in Miami.
Debut for the Son
Florida Senator Marco Rubio, son of Cuban immigrants, is a frequently mentioned name in speculations. He is considered a running mate who could help Trump pick up votes among the large Latin American population in the US.
Even 53-year-old Rubio threw various jabs at Harris during the campaign meeting. Among other things, he called her Biden's "stand-in" and mocked her laughter.
The big news was otherwise that Donald Trump's youngest son, the newly turned 18-year-old Barron Trump, made his debut at one of his father's campaign meetings.
Donald Trump, born in 1946, was the 45th President of the United States between 2017 and 2021. The outspoken Republican won the presidential election in 2016 with the promise to "make America great again", but failed to be re-elected in November 2020.
Trump was the first president who did not have prior experience as an elected politician or military officer. Instead, he has devoted his life to business.
Born in Queens, New York, he has a degree in economics with a focus on real estate from the University of Pennsylvania. Trump inherited real estate from his father and built an empire with a focus on, among other things, hotels and golf courses.
Donald Trump is the father of five children and is married for the third time. His current wife is Slovenian-American Melania Trump.
