The meeting took place less than a week after Trump threatened in social media with 25 percent tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico from the day he takes office again at the White House.
The statement sparked concern in Ottawa.
When Donald Trump makes such statements, he also intends to carry them out. There is no doubt about that, said Trudeau at a press conference in his home country on Friday, before departing for Florida.
But after the visit and dinner at Trump's residence Mar-a-Lago on Friday, the tone was somewhat different – at least outwardly:
It was an excellent conversation, said Trudeau to reporters on Saturday before departing for Canada.
In pictures taken at the dinner, Trump and Trudeau are seen sitting side by side, accompanied by Howard Lutnick, Trump's pick for the post of trade minister, and Mike Waltz, nominated to become national security adviser.
Trump is threatening tariffs after claiming that drugs and migrants are pouring in across the border to the USA, and that Canada and Mexico are not doing what they can to stop it.
Mexico and Canada, and China, which Trump has threatened with 10 percent tariffs for similar reasons, are the USA's three most important trading partners.
