The initiative was led by the independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who has been a vocal opponent to Israel's offensive in Gaza and often votes along the Democratic Party's line.
By supporting Israel, the US becomes an "accomplice" to human rights violations, according to Sanders. Moreover, it would undermine the US's credibility in other geopolitical issues, he believes.
People will say "you're worried about China, you're worried about Russia and Iran. Well, why are you then financing the starvation of children in Gaza?" said Sanders.
However, the three resolutions – whose purpose was to block the latest sale of American weapons to Israel worth 20 billion dollars – were all voted down. Only about 20 of the chamber's 100 members voted in favor.
The US has previously warned Israel that its military support may be withdrawn if the humanitarian situation in Gaza does not improve, but has yet to act on the threat.
