Traffic deaths in Norway down to 1940s levels

The number of people who died in traffic accidents in Norway decreased last year by nearly 20 percent. According to preliminary figures from Statens vegvesen, roughly the Norwegian transport agency, 90 people lost their lives in 2024, compared to 110 people the year before.

This is the lowest figure in modern times, with the exception of the pandemic year 2021 when 80 people lost their lives in traffic.

With the exception of the corona years, we have to go back to 1947 to find a calendar year with fewer than 100 deaths. It's a milestone, and it shows that we're on the right track, says Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård.

He emphasizes, however, that there is still a need to strengthen traffic safety to reach the goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2040.

It's still far too many who lose their lives on Norwegian roads, he says.

The figures show that most fatalities, 35, occur in run-off-road accidents, while 33 died in collisions. Motorcyclists are overrepresented in the accident statistics with 20 dead, the same number as in 2023.
