Nordens Ark in Bohuslän has received new additions to the tiger enclosure. Two Amur tiger cubs, a male and a female, were born two weeks ago.
The cubs, which weigh 3 kilos each, came as a pleasant surprise, writes the zoological park in a press release.
The parents were born in 2021, the female came from England in December and the male was born at Nordens Ark outside Hunnebostrand.
"We are happy that they had cubs already now. It's a bit unusual for them to have cubs when the parents are so young", says Ewa Wikberg, who is the zoological manager at Nordens Ark, in the press release.
On Wednesday, a veterinary examination was performed where the cubs were weighed, dewormed, and microchipped before being returned to the enclosure.
Tiger cubs are born blind and are therefore completely dependent on their mother for the first time before they can see the world at two weeks old.
The Amur tiger, which is considered the world's largest wild cat species, is classified as endangered. There are approximately 500 Amur tigers in Russia, according to information from the park.
