Three men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a man and then setting fire to his home in Tranås. The prosecutor describes the murder as brutal and merciless.

The district court has shared our assessment and convicted in accordance with our demands, says prosecutor Heléne Thomasson to TT.

Early one October morning last year, the emergency services were alerted to a fire in a block of flats in Tranås. Smoke divers found the deceased man inside the flat. The man had been subjected to severe and repeated violence before the fire, but was still alive when it started, according to the prosecutor.

It is a brutal act. It is terribly merciless and the district court also expresses this in its assessment, that the victim was subjected to indescribable suffering and must have felt intense fear of death, says Heléne Thomasson.

Two of the men are in their 35 and the third is in his 20s. All three have been sentenced to life imprisonment in Eksjö district court for murder and aggravated arson.

The two older men deny any wrongdoing. The younger man has admitted to aiding and abetting assault but has otherwise denied any wrongdoing.
