Around 3.2 million children under the age of five are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2025 in war-torn Sudan, estimates the UN children's fund Unicef.
Of this number, around 772,000 children are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition, says Eva Hinds at Unicef to AFP.
The suffering in Sudan is enormous since the civil war broke out in the spring of 2023. People are struggling to survive and the medical needs are overwhelming, says Claire San Filippo at Doctors Without Borders in a press release.
At Bashair Hospital in the capital, attacks have continued in recent months, despite dialogue with the warring parties, writes the organization. Among other things, armed soldiers have entered the hospital and threatened medical staff, and last year a patient was shot to death at the hospital.
Now, Doctors Without Borders has decided to discontinue its medical activities at the hospital, a decision that Claire San Filippo describes as devastating.
"Without sufficient security, it has become unsustainable to continue when our staff and patients are threatened", she says in the press release.
The hospital is one of the few that function and offer free medical care in southern Khartum.
